Azores - 2008

Planning for a trip to the Azores on August 26 - Sep 16, 2008

Latest updates: August 31 - Well we are in Newport after spending a couple of days visiting family and making some connections. Good food, lots of laughs, a visit with Aunt Barbara and all is well. Rich and Lu and family have been on travel in Portugal, Azores, Greece and who knows where else, but the emails have been forwarded and it sounds like a great time has been had. We've been with Ed & Alicia and Zach and Taylor. Fun.

We are making our way to Little Compton to say goodbye to Adam & Kristin and family, then off to Mashpee to see Lisa, Mike, and Em and Danny. Then off to the airport for a 10:00 flight. One of the few remaining items is where to stay on Sep 8th when we travel to Lisbon. If that's our biggest problem, you know all is well.

Casa Cadaval Portugal Ribatejzno Padre Pedro 2002 ($8.99 US) Per Eric Asimov Best of tasting, with plenty of personality and structure. "Portugal is an escellent source of good, inexpensive wines," though this vintage may be hard to find in the US now because of a change in importers.

Terceira bullfights are renowned worldwide. The bull is simply let loose tethered by a long rope where a group of man prevents it from getting out of control. The bull is pretty much free to roam and the comical situations arising out of men and women trying to both tease and run away from the bull are worth your time. Serious injury are rare but have happened. As a warning, don't take the Terceira bulls lightly, and don't expect to be rescued by the men pulling the rope. They're just there to keep the bulls from venturing out of the permissible radius. The bull is pretty much free outside that.
